What is SaaS?

Software as a Service (SaaS) cloudservice.

SaaS stands for Software as a Service and is a way of delivering software applications over the internet as-a-service. Before the concept of SaaS, you had to install software on-site or at an independent data center and you were responsible for hosting the software on your servers. Maintaining software and hardware is very time-consuming and by using a SaaS you free yourself from this complexity.

When using a SaaS solution, the provider manages the hosting of the application on their servers and is also responsible for security and performance. This means that you don´t have to invest heavily in hardware and software just to get started with the service. In addition, you don’t need special expertise to manage security issues, a trusted SaaS provider will ensure the security of your data.

Features of a SaaS

Works on all devices - everywhere

A SaaS solution is cloud-based, meaning it is accessible via a web browser, on all devices, everywhere. Also, the web-based application synchronizes with other systems in real-time, allowing you to always access real-time data. Furthermore, all users have access to the same information at the same time which can be crucial for successful cooperation within and among firms.

Central maintenance of code and infrastructure

An important SaaS feature is that an update of the software will be available for all users resulting in easier maintenance for the SaaS provider, making it both cheaper and faster to use the software. This is because all the users share one common infrastructure and source code that is centrally maintained by the SaaS provider.

Pay per month or usage.

Typically for SaaS or any other as-a-Service provider is that the payment model usually is per month or based on usage. An advantage of this pricing model is that you don´t need to make a large financial investment to use the software. Also, you can add users to the software making it easy for a company to grow with it. Or if you experience lower demand or seasonality for your services and need to increase cash flow you can easily scale down.

Easy to customize a SaaS software

When start using SaaS software, because of the common code and infrastructure, you have access to the same features that the existing customers have. If the SaaS has existed for a while, it is likely to have many features and you can customize which ones you want to use.
