The benefits of using the web-based WMS Ongoing Warehouse for 3PL customers

Companies looking for a 3PL logistics provider contact Ongoing Warehouse with questions about the benefits of outsourcing their warehouse handling to a logistics company using our WMS. We have therefore summarized some pros for you in the text below.

For you as a goods owner it is important that the people who manage your inventory and logistics handling, have a competent Warehouse Management System (WMS) that is easy to integrate with your ERP systems, Web shops and other surrounding systems such as transport- and distribution systems.

The fact that Ongoing Warehouse is web-based means transparency. You can log in to view information about your products such as stock balance, traceability and much more. Many logistics providers use the web-based warehouse system, Ongoing Warehouse, which is the most widely used warehouse management system (WMS) in the Nordic region as well as it is used in several other countries in Europe.

Below we have listed five advantages of using Ongoing Warehouse seen from your point of view as a goods owner:

1. Ready-made Integrations

Integrations make life easier as manual work disappears, reducing lead-times and the risk of errors.

Ongoing has already developed integrations to the most commonly used ERP systems, web shops and transport administrative systems. If you have any of these systems, it's quick and easy to integrate with Ongoing. This saves you time and money because the integration is already done.

An integrated flow of goods can for example be set-up like this; purchasing orders and orders with article and customer information automatically transmitted to Ongoing for pick and pack, and then electronically sent to one or several transport systems for further distribution to customers. Ongoing´s ready-made integrations with major transport- and distributions systems, such as Unifaun, Consignor and ShipCloud, makes it quick and easy to deliver your products to your customers. Ongoing, with integrations to surrounding systems in the logistics chain, is thus a complete system set-up that can be quickly implemented for your product flow.

Click here to see which systems Ongoing has made integration to and what the integrations include.

2. An open and well-documented API (technical interface)

Ongoing Warehouse exposes a standardized Application Programming Interface (or API) which third parties can use to integrate with the system. This makes it possible for any external system to send and retrieve information from Ongoing. Either the adjoining system supplier can do the integration, or you can hire a consultant, or let your own developer do the integration by using the API. This means that any party with system knowledge can quickly and easily integrate a system with Ongoing.

To see what integrations have been made by different partners via the Ongoing API, click here

For more information about the API and how it works, see Ongoing's Developer site.

3. Quick and easy to set up efficient handling of your goods

Ongoing Warehouse is a standard system that has acquired extensive system expertise over the past ten years to effectively set up different types of product flows in the system. Ongoing has the standard features and standard components needed to quickly and efficiently set-up the most common goods flows. This allows efficient handling in the warehouse to a low cost. Examples of standard features in Ongoing are e-commerce picking, frozen / refrigerated goods (expire date), serial number, batch picking, and much more.

In Ongoing, you can also quickly set up different types of standard scannings to streamline the handling of your goods and reduce errors.

4. Keep track of your goods 24/7 through Customer Log-in

Ongoing Warehouse is web-based, which means that you can log-in to the system at any time to get all relevant information about your products. It is a big advantage for you. You avoid unnecessary and time-consuming communication with your logistics provider. If you are wondering about something or quickly need information you can easily access the system yourself. You can for example see inventory balance, monitor and follow up orders, see track & trace and much more. When using scanning, you can in real-time follow inbound- and outbound deliveries. You can also see different types of statistics, for example to follow up that the handling of your goods is managed efficiently. Another advantage is that you have full traceability of your goods, which is a great benefit if your products require serial number or batch handling.

5. A robust and market leading WMS means safety

For you as a goods owner, it is safe for both you and your products to employ a proven WMS used by many companies in Sweden, Scandinavia and other countries. Ongoing Warehouse is the most widely used warehouse system in the Nordic region with approximately 3,000 companies’ products running in the system and thousands of people using it daily. The software company Ongoing Warehouse AB, which is behind the system, is specialized in Warehouse Management Systems and has been in existence for ten years. The company is growing steadily, has a very sound economy, and continuously develops new features and improvements in the system.

Yoyo

Danish logistics gazelle YOYO Global Freight chooses Ongoing as WMS-provider

YOYO Global Freight, one of Denmark's top companies in freight and logistics, has recently started using Ongoing Warehouse as their warehouse management system. "Ongoing made it easy for us to choose a WMS provider, the system had what we were looking for”, says Christian Bøgelund Ditlevsen, Corporate Development Manager at YOYO Global Freight.

YOYO Global Freight was founded in 2009 in Odense, Denmark. In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 YOYO Global Freight were named as a Gazelle company by Børsen (Denmark’s Financial Times.)

So, why did we choose Ongoing – and what are the greatest benefits? It's mainly three things. It's very cost-efficient and scalable, which allows us to be flexible towards our customers. The second thing is that Ongoing WMS has integrations with the ERP-system and transport system we use, that makes our whole warehouse operation more efficient and timesaving. The last thing is that the system has all the functions we need as a 3PL-provider, continues Christian Bøgelund Ditlevsen.

YOYO Global Freight offers global transport, warehouse and logistic solutions. The foundation of their success is based on their mission “Our mission is to make freight and logistics as easy and convenient as possible”. They are experts in finding the most effective transportation and warehouse solutions globally. Furthermore, YOYO Global Freight puts much effort into its customer service, which also is one of the reasons they appreciate working with Ongoing Warehouse. “The service and response times when we need updates or software developments have been excellent. During the implementation weekend, Ongoing's CEO Fredrik Einarsson, put himself available to us with is personal phone number, should there be any issues. Of course there were no issues” Ditlevsen continues.

“It is a pleasure working with YOYO Global Freight, especially because they are a gazelle company who has a strong and profitable growth which confirms that they are excellent at what they do. We are looking forward to a great and longlasting relationship with YOYO.” says Fredrik Einarsson, CEO of Ongoing Warehouse.

Ongoing Warehouse is a growing software company based in Gothenburg, Sweden which specializes in a web-based Warehouse Management System (WMS) for 3PL companies. Ongoing is the market leader in its niche in Scandinavia while growing steadily in Europe.

Logisticompany AB uses Ongoing WMS to streamline health care logistics

Logisticompany AB is an independent alternative for transport in Helsingborg, Sweden, who also offers 3PL services. When one of their customers, trading medical and pharmaceutical products, wanted to expand their contract, Logisticompany AB decided to implement the customer in their new warehouse management system, Ongoing WMS.

As is often the case for healthcare products, the different suppliers labelled the goods with different barcode standards, either HIBC or GS1. HIBC is an American standard for medical and pharmaceutical products whereas GS1 is a non-profit association that has developed standards for labelling goods e.g. GTIN. Both contains a unique identifier for the goods together with other information such as batch number, expiry date or quantity. Though an increasing number of companies are replacing HIBC with GS1, HIBC are still commonly used, primarily in USA. This can be problematic for logistics provers, which have to deal with barcodes that need to be decoded in different ways.

Logisticompany AB, having a high focus on user friendly warehouse processes, wanted to be able to handle both barcodes the same way, reducing the need for warehouse workers to know what type of barcode they were dealing with. “To be successful as a logistic company, you need to have software to make the working processes easy for everyone working in the warehouse” says Logisticompany's Partner and Sales Manager Peter Forsberg. Together with their WMS supplier, Ongoing Warehouse, they started a project to build a scanning module that could handle multiple barcode standards without the user identifying the barcode type.

Johan Härdmark, account manager for Logisticompany AB at Ongoing Warehouse, says the solution has a wider usage than scanning multiple barcodes. In many cases, the problem might not only be the usage of multiple barcode standards on different products, but that the labels do not follow the standard in full. “For example, the serial number might be labelled as a batch-number which results in storing data in the wrong field in the WMS which in turn makes features not to working as intended” Johan explains. With the new scanning several ways to decode a barcode can be set up, together with validations of the data. Once a barcode is scanned, Ongoing WMS will try to decode the barcode according to the schemas set up.  When put in use, the new scanning did not only make the process in the warehouse easier for the warehouse staff but also speeded up the inbound and outbound processes and resulted in better control of the goods.

Logisticompany AB, valuing a close relationship with their own customers, has appreciated that the development has been in close cooperation with Ongoing Warehouse “We have become a great team, which is one of the success factors.” Peter says.

Automating using SaaS WMS

When M3 Logistics wanted to use their warehouse more efficiently and improve the ergonomics for their staff, they chose to invest in two vertical storage lifts from Kardex Remstar. The lifts were integrated with their existing warehouse management system, Ongoing WMS, using Ongoing's automation API.

Christian Nilsson, IT and logistic manager at M3 Logistics, says the automation hardware is especially helpful for their customers having a small number of products. “With the new vertical lifts, we can more easily allocate staff to work at the machine to pick and pack orders more efficiently. We do not have to spend unnecessary time going back and forth across the warehouse.”

Offering a possibility to integrate automation hardware is a great way to let customers build up their own warehouse solutions. Ongoing Warehouse’s CEO Fredrik Einarsson means it is central to leave the choice of hardware suppliers to the customers. “We have a wide range of customers and they need to be able to develop their warehouse solutions in different directions. Some needs a high level of automation and should be able to integrate hardware from any supplier, which our automation API allows.”

Although just recently putting the storage lifts in production, they can already see improvements such as improved space utilization, shorter lead times, a tidier warehouse and better ergonomics. “All those parameters contribute to make the staff feel better.” says Christian.

The new solution will now be carefully tested in production, and if the good results seen already remains, M3 Logistics plans to increase their level of automation further. Christian means it is important to keep up with developments in order to meet the new requirements as the e-commerce business is continuing to grow.

“The trend is towards more web sales consisting of more, but smaller deliveries. This means that the warehouses must adapt how the goods are handled. There is a requirement for faster deliveries and an increase in returns, then you should have flexible systems for both deliveries and returns. One way to go is to automate.” Christian continues.

Johannes Blomquist, software developer at Ongoing Warehouse, has taken part in developing the automation API and says a key point is to make sure the API is easy to implement and scale, something Christian agrees to: “Ongoing has created a simple API to have a standard solution for implementing more machines in a simple way without major development costs.”

We're launching our new REST API in order to simplify integrations

In order to simplify for customers who wish to integrate their own systems with the Ongoing WMS, we are now launching our new API based on REST.

Customers who want to integrate their own systems with the Ongoing WMS have previously had to use our API based on SOAP technology (Simple Object Access Protocol). We have developed a new API based on REST (Representation State Transfer). This new API decreases the time it takes to build a new integration with the Ongoing WMS. Development of the SOAP API will continue as before.

Why the Gazelle Award matters

First and foremost, it is a security for our customers and partners. Ongoing is financially stable and we are here to stay and continue to develop the system in close cooperation with our customers and partners.

Ongoing Warehouse has, like several of our customers, been appointed a “Gazelle Company” again this year by Swedish Business magazine Dagens Industri (DI). We may not be those who care much about awards, but it obviously feels good to be called a “Gazelle”. Since its inception ten years ago, Ongoing Warehouse has been growing steadily, with good profitability and only using own money. In short, a growing company with very healthy finances. Why does this matter? First and foremost, it is a security for our customers and partners. Ongoing is financially stable and we are here to stay and continue to develop the system in close cooperation with our customers and partners. It is also important for our employees that we not only growing but do it in a responsibly and stable manner.

The term “Gazelle” was coined by US economist David Birch when he examined which companies grow and create jobs. It was not the big companies ("the Elephants") nor the small companies (the "Mice"). Birch discovered a type of fast-growing company that accounted for only 3% of all companies in the United States but accounted for 70% of all new jobs! He called them “the Gazelles”, “they run fast and jump high”!
